Here are some side effects of cancer treatment: Insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, depression, aches and pains. Though, cancer treatments, such as surgery and radiation, are necessary, the side effects are almost as scary as having cancer. Even more unfortunate, many cancer patients do not know that there are ways they can relieve many of these symptoms, if not all of them.

An article from MSNBC showed that studies reported that yoga is great exercises that can also help cancer patients relieve their symptoms.

Yoga, especially hatha yoga — the meditation yoga, is a spiritual exercise that has many benefits for cancer patients, especially patients with rare or aggressive cancer, such as mesothelioma that is triggered from asbestos exposure. In this article it lists specific reasons why yoga is not only a great idea for cancer patients, it is a must for them.

Essentially, the stretching and holding poses from many hatha yoga asanas promote the growth of anti-cancer cells, called macrophages. Even more, these types of holding poses helps the body’s circulatory system, improving the blood flow that carries important minerals and nutrients to the parts of the body that desperately need it after radiation treatment.

However, because of the patient’s severe condition, yoga should only be practiced under the care of a professional yoga instructor, especially one who understands its importance as an alternative complimentary cancer treatment.

Some doctors also found from various studies that yoga helps patients maintain a positive sense of well-being, which is very important during recovery. Optimistic people are typically healthier than pessimistic people. This is usually because optimism allows the body to relax, which in turn allows the brain to send positive neurological signals to the body’s organs. The meditation sessions — usually in the beginning of a hatha yoga session — help patients clear their mind, allowing a more optimistic and courageous attitude towards their condition.

Mesothelioma treatment, and other aggressive treatments, can destroy healthy tissues and cells in the patient’s body, forcing the body to work extra hard to repair itself, thus the insomnia and fatigue side effects. However, patients who practice yoga report feeling more energized and getting better quality of sleep at night, enhance quality of life, and increase life expectancy. This is mostly because yoga asanas allow for a full body workout, distributing energy to every part of the body.

As more studies are done, doctors will soon discover just how important yoga, and other types of alternative cancer treatments, is to cancer patients. Clinics across the nation may incorporate yoga therapy as a part of their patient’s recovery process.

For years yoga has been revered for its ability to calm the mind, increase the body’s flexibility and help the individual find a center. It has also been credited with health benefits. For those that think the practice is simply about “crazy” poses, breathing and a rule full of “Om” chanters, you may consider that yoga can actually alleviate ailments and increase overall health.

Yoga brings together the mind and body. Through deep breathing and exercises, often times challenging, the body learns to relax, deal with stress and anxiety. Depending on what you are looking to get out of your practice, you can choose to lead a full throttle “yoga lifestyle” which includes a certain diet (often vegetarian or vegan) and meditation or you can choose to practice different styles of yoga.

Perhaps you just need stress management for an often hectic life? Less challenging yoga styles such as Hatha, stress relief yoga or Yin yoga will help with this. These styles are not so aggressive and they focus on breathing (which in yoga represents your energy) and perfecting certain stress relieving postures (poses to increase flexibility and strength).

Let’s face it, we live in a very stressful day and age. Smartphones, laptops, business meetings, family vacations, bills (insert stress-inducing life activity here) run our lives and often times we have nowhere to unload that energy. Having an outlet to put stress into while benefiting your body can work wonders. In fact, according to the Mayo Clinic, yoga can reduce stress “by drawing the focus away from your day and toward calm.” If you think about it, it’s actually pretty simple. Your mind is allowed to take a break from the deadlines, timelines and “have-tos” of the day. It is a time to focus on you and center in on bringing together the body and mind to increase flexibility and strength. Who knows? You could be less stressed and in better shape at the end of all this and that’s a true double threat.

Practicing yoga does not involve investing in much in terms of equipment. Ideally you will need an open mind, passion for the practice and a couple of tools to help you through your practice.

Yoga Mat: One of the most personal pieces of equipment, a yoga mat is what will support you through the hours and minutes of posing, meditating, breathing. For some people, the lighter the mat the better, as they don’t want to get all the sweat of the practice locked into the mat. For others, the more support, or the thicker the mat is, the better – as you may suffer from a bad back or prefer more support under the feet or back. Regardless of your preference there is a saying in yoga that whatever you bring with you to the beginning of practice, you should “leave it on the mat.” This means that whatever worries you have had, whatever has effected you throughout the day should be sweated out through your practice and left on the mat. You will see after many hours of practice that the kind of mat you choose is very important and your mat will be your biggest ally.

Yoga Block: A prop, as they are often called, a yoga block are used to help with alignment and offer support. Used for standing poses, in which one hand needs to be on the floor (like half moon pose) or for floor poses, such as backbends. Blocks help alleviate pressure on the body for those who need a little extra support, those who are working on flexibility and for those with back or other body issues.

Yoga Straps: Resembling a belt ,yoga straps are used to assist people when a pose involves touching the toes or bringing hands together behind the back. Often times, you may not be flexible enough at first to reach behind the back or come into a full forward bend and the straps can assist you in achieving these poses.

It is also important to remember to bring a towel and/or a blanket with you to practice if the class involves a lot of seated poses. The blanket or towel may be folded on top of the mat for added support for the hips and buttocks. Additionally, the towel is useful for helping dry off the body during hot yoga sessions or intense yoga workouts.

Practicing yoga is all about postures and breathing; therefore you want to be at your most comfortable in terms of clothing. Apparel you can move and flow in is key since you could be in “Downward Dog” one minute and “Warrior 2” the next. For this reason, stretchy pants, sports bras or sports tanks, tank tops and clothes with breathability are favored when practicing yoga. Whether male or female, the right clothing for your practice is out there.

Yoga Pants: Usually with a thick waistband, these pants are made for major stretching and movement. Tighter around the hips and thighs, flaring out from the knee to the ankle, yoga pants are made of a cotton and spandex blend. You can opt for the typical yoga pant, which is full length and sits right on the foot, or the crop which fits more like a legging and stops at the shin. Yoga pants cost between $18-$100 depending on your preference.

Yoga Shorts: Made from the same material as yoga pants, the shorts come in handy for those practicing hot yoga or practicing in hot climates, such as retreats in India or the Caribbean. The shorts also offer the wide waistband for support.

Yoga Bra: Important for women who practice, the yoga bra offers support but is not as binding as a sports bra one may use for trail running or other intense sports. Yoga bras just ensure that the chest is being held in place throughout all movements and offers support to prevent injury. As with most sports bras, a yoga bra can range between $20-$60, depending on your support level and style preference.

Yoga Tank Top: Again, yoga apparel is all about comfort and yoga tanks are no exception. Usually made of a light weight, but semi-form fitting material, yoga tank tops offer coverage without inhibiting the body’s movement. Often times the silhouette of the shirt will move with you and will allow breathability and ventilation for those sweat-inducing yoga practices.

What you wear to yoga should be about functionality. Your clothing should move with you—not bind, pinch, squeeze, push out or dig in all the wrong places. The last thing you want when trying to clear your mind and concentrate on your practice is to worry about how your clothing fits. Wearing the right yoga clothing is essential.

Practiced in India for over 6,000 years, yoga is a spiritual practice. The word “yoga” means “yoke together.” A perfect name for a practice that is meant to bring together the mind and the body as one.

While no one knows the exact date of origin or even who began practicing yoga first, there are some parts of the practice that date centuries.

The general term, “yoga” is often applied to the practice of postures as we know them; however, yoga is actually more a lifestyle. In fact, the postures are just one of the “Eight Limbs” of yoga.
Written by the sage Patanjali in his guidebook, the “Yoga Sutras,” the eight limbs should be followed by those interested in yoga, in order to live a moral, ethical life and achieve oneness with the universe.

In short the eight limbs are:
Yama: Universal morality
Niyama: Personal observances
Asanas: Body postures
Pranayama: Breathing exercises, and control of prana
Pratyahara: Control of the senses
Dharana: Concentration and cultivating inner perceptual awareness
Dhyana: Devotion, Meditation on the Divine
Samadhi: Union with the Divine

Typical yoga, as taught in classrooms in the United States, focuses on asanas, dharana, dhyana and pranayama.

Yoga first came to the United States in the late 1800s. Although it was practiced by some, yoga didn’t gain much popularity among the general population until in and around the 1960’s. Due to the its health benefits, it has become quite popular as a form of exercise, as well as a Yoga lifestyle.

Yoga has been practiced for centuries. What was created in India years ago has been shared throughout the world as a way to heal the body, increase strength and flexibility and, ultimately, help those who practice lead a calmer and more centered lifestyle.

The benefits that yoga is best known for are:

• Flexibility
• Endurance
• Coordination
• Posture
• Digestion
• Concentration
• Body Composition (toning, weight loss)

In addition to help the body become more toned and aid with the above mentioned issues, yoga is also used to aid those with more serious health issues like:
• Asthma
• Heart Disease
• Diabetes
• Back Pain
• Arthritis
• Those who need therapy, including cancer patients and survivors

These benefits and more are the reasons why so many people have been practicing this ancient art for years. What you bring to the practice is all your own and each person practices with their own goal. Becoming certified to teach this rewarding and positive art can be just another added benefit.

Bikram yoga, or hot yoga as it is sometimes referred to as, is an intense style of yoga. Created by Bikram Chodbury, a practice of yoga since the age of four, Bikram yoga is based on 26 postures. These specific poses were created by Bikram to maximize the body’s health and are to be practiced in a heated room in order to push the body to its fullest potential, encouraging blood flow and warming the muscles.

What Makes Bikram Different?

Unlike other yoga styles, Bikram does not involve any meditation. The entire 90 minute session is devoted to postures, allowing the body to continuously move and flow. Although it is a version of the Hatha style of yoga, Bikram is far more intense. The room in which Bikram is practiced in must be heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The hot temperature is said to help the body warm faster and flow blood quicker. The class, which Bikram created to be simple enough for beginners, involves 12 floor postures that address the proper alignment of the spine, two breathing exercises, 12 standing postures devoted to reestablishing musculoskeletal balance. The other thing that sets this form of yoga apart from others is that there are no inversions. Bikram believed inversions to be too hard for beginners to grasp.

How to Become a Bikram Yoga Teacher:

Becoming certified to teach Bikram is a bit more involved than other certifications. Because this style is very intense, those instructing it must be strong-willed and passionate. You must also have taken regular Bikram courses at a studio for at least six months prior to applying, as well as a letter of recommendation from an instructor. You must also be at least 21 years old.

Those who meet the requirements, are interested and accepted must attend a nine week, six-day-a-week course taught by the Bikram Yoga College of India. Classes, two a day, are typically longer than the normal time of 90 minutes, as time is devoted to each pose in order for the student to truly perfect it.

Your certification will ultimately depend on your ability to perform the Bikram poses, recite the Bikram dialogue, your ability to pass tests and fulfill the curriculum* affiliated with the course, as well as participate in workshops and clinics.

Remember: Not everyone who attends the Bikram Yoga College of India is guaranteed yoga teacher certification. This course and this type of yoga is a rather sub-category of the practice and requires a determined student.

*The curriculum involved in Bikram yoga is as follows:
Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, athology, the chakra system, therapeutic applications/health benefits of yoga, the integration of medical and yogic systems for total health/well-being and information running your own yoga studio.

When deciding to earn your yoga teacher certification, it is important to understand, become comfortable with and, if possible, immerse yourself in the yoga lifestyle.
It is important to remember that yoga isn’t just about the physical but also about the mental and the emotional. Entering the yoga teaching world and helping others embrace the poses, the meditation and the mental benefits of yoga means living the yoga lifestyle.

The yoga lifestyle consists of five codes of conduct, or YAMAS. Yama means “your attitude toward others.” They are as follows:

AHIMSA ( non-violence): This applies to everything we come in contact with, whether it be humans or any other living species. It is about how we treat others around us and focuses on kindness, to others and to ourselves.

SATYA ( truthfulness): This is about living a truthful life. Being honest to yourself and those around but never harming someone with a hurtful truth.

ASTEYA ( non-stealing): This rule focuses on not stealing anything, whether it be an idea or a material possession. Do not take something from another that is not yours. Take only what you need in life and leave the rest for others. This rule allows no selfishness.

BRAHMACHARYA ( faithfulness): This rule is about not giving in to selfish desires, not feeding the ego and remaining true to one’s self while abstaining from non-necessities.

APARIGRAHA (non-greed): This rule focuses on taking only what you need. Do not take advantage of a person or a situation and do not act on selfish ideas. Live a life free from greed.

The practice of yoga is about achieving inner peace and happiness. The teaching of yoga is about passing that unto others; therefore, knowing, embracing and living the yoga lifestyle while seeking your certification will allow you to truly deepen your practice.

If you have an innate desire to help others and have a passion for yoga, earn your yoga teaching certification. By becoming a Registered Yoga Teacher, you can impact people’s lives in a positive way. In fact, yoga is being used more and more to help people in all aspects of their life.

Just as yoga is sought after by people looking to get in shape, increase flexibility or bring a sense of balance to their lives, yoga is also sought after for those with fertility/conception issues or women going though life changes, such as menopause.

If you are a woman seeking your yoga teacher training certification, perhaps, the idea of helping other women in their life changes appeals to you. Imagine a career in which you can help a woman embrace menopause or assist in her fertility process. Seeing someone benefit from your yoga instruction would be undoubtedly inspiring.

Yoga for Conception and Fertility:
Conception and fertility can be an overwhelming process. If a person is having trouble conceiving, it can encompass their body and mind, therefore putting unwanted stress on the body. Yoga, specifically restorative yoga, is being sought out more and more by those with these issues; as certain poses can aid in the fertility process. When teaching this course you will focus more on the benefits of forward bends, reclining poses, assisted headstands and poses that are thought to aid in conception. The practice of these asanas (poses), the stress alleviated from focusing on the breath and meditation added to the health and fitness benefits make yoga a perfect outlet for women seeking to conceive.

Yoga for Menopause:
Yoga has been known to help people become more centered; to alleviate mental stress and calm emotions. Menopause is known to wreak havoc on hormones and emotions and cause stress. Yoga is also known to help adjust problems in the endocrine system, which is effected during menopause. For this reason, more and more, women are seeking yoga classes that will assist them in alleviating the symptoms. Teaching courses that focus on meditation, twists and restorative poses can help women avoid weight gain, increase muscle mass, aid in sleeping and assist in lowering stress caused to adrenal glands during this inevitable “change.”

Obtaining your certification and teaching courses that focus on a specific group (such as women) can help build up a clientele base, increase your overall knowledge of the human body, as well as help others going through difficult times in their lives.

Yoga Teaching Certification for Children, Elderly and Special Needs

If becoming a Registered Yoga Teacher peaks your interest because of a desire to teach children, the elderly and those with special needs, there are programs and centers that will help you further your education or certify in these specializations.

Children: For those who love the practice of yoga and love children, becoming a yoga instructor for children could be a wise and rewarding career move. Yoga for children has been said to improve digestion, improve motor skills and flexibility and improve focus.

Special Needs:
The therapeutic benefits of Yoga have been praised for ages. Yoga’s ability to rejuvenate the body, increase strength/ flexibility, focus on breathing and allow the muscles to deeply relax makes it a perfect tool to use for therapy sessions.

Safe enough for children and people of all ages, these forms of yoga focus on body awareness, flexibility, breathing exercises and formative exercises to help those with Autism, ADHD, muscle loss, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, as well as an array of other disabilities.

Adults:
Yoga can also play an integral role for the elderly who may need the assistance of physical therapy to alleviate ailments, aches and joint pain. Yoga is often suggested for adults who have Cardiovascular disease, joint replacements, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, those who have suffered from a stroke or those with muscle/back pain.

Certification:
As with any style of yoga, you should teach what you feel most passionate about. Become a certified RYT and seek out weekend courses that specialize in yoga for children, the elderly and those with special needs. You will learn new ways to teach classes (chair poses, gentle yoga, meditation, stretch) and be able to further your knowledge of your particular area of interest.

Yoga studios throughout the country offer Children’s Yoga Teacher Training Programs. It is often required that you have at least one year of yoga study (asanas, philosophy) under your belt, but it is not mandatory that you are already an RYT. It is mandatory that you love children, have a passion to help others and have a deep love for the yoga practice.

These special courses are often offered as an add-on, or a specialization and take place during an intensive, curriculum filled weekend.
